Sri Lanka police busts 107.22Kg of heroin on seized Iranian vessel

Colombo : 107.22 kilograms of heroin was discovered on an Iranian vessel that was seized on Sunday March 24th, in the southern Sri Lanka.

In an operation carried out by the Police Special Task Force, Police Narcotic Bureau and the Sri Lanka Navy, the trawler type of boat was seized and 9 Iranians in possession of 107.22 kilograms of heroin were arrested. The suspects and the trawler were transferred to the port, in Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo. The ship had left Iran in or around March 14th.

The 9 arrested Iranians arrested in Sri Lanka, were onboard the Iranian trawler carrying drug shipments to the island nation.

Police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that 99 parcels of heroin were stashed in 4 fertilizer bags on board the trawler. He added that the 9 arrested Iranians who onboard posed as fishermen and were headed to Sri Lanka to be deliver the shipment to a drug smuggler in the island. 

 

 

He noted that they have powers to make this arrest in the framework of international as well as domestic law and that was how they seized the suspicious vessel.
